Ireland

  • One of the highest rated education systems in Europe.
  • Wide range of subjects, activities and sports.
  • Climbo works with local coordinators.
  • 12-18 YO
  • School year and term programs
  • Public and private schools
  • Family accommodation or boarding school
  • Starting at 13.500 € for a school year program

The Irish education system is recognised as one of the most developed and successful in Europe. The Irish secondary school system is divided into two cycles – Junior and Senior, each of three years of duration.

The Junior cycle is a non-specialised programme covering a broad range of subjects. Students generally choose between 9 and 11 subjects from the officially recognized list of academic choices.  Students complete the cycle by sitting the state examination for the Junior Certificate. International students are not required to take the examination to validate their studies.

The Senior Cycle is more specialised to allow students prepare for university and career choices. The first year of Senior Cycle is called Transition Year and the objective of this year is to promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of pupils and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society. It combines Life-Skills programmes with a core academic curriculum. The final two years (5th & 6th Years) are preparation for the Leaving Certificate.

The standard day schools in Ireland are the equivalent of a public school in most European countries. Those schools are mostly privately owned but maintained by the Irish Government. Schools are located in a wide range of locations throughout Ireland. This program is eligible only for EU/EEA students.

Most schools are located outside Dublin, where students perform better in local standard schools in towns with a population of between five and fifteen thousand people. International students adapt to family lifre much better in smaller towns, make more friends and normally are in a walking distance from the host family to the school.

There are different types of schools in Ireland – single sex, co-educational, religious or non religious. There are a very good school facilities and a good choice of academic subjects. The teacher/student ratio in schools varies from 1:17 to 1:25.

Ireland is justifiably proud of its long tradition of welcoming international students and of the reputation of the Irish as a warm, hospitable and friendly people. Irish people value family life above almost everything else and this is reflected in the quality of our host families and schools.  International students enjoy local schools and live with local host families while their stay in Ireland.

The choose the type of school for each student is based on validation requirements, English level, age, pririor school history, programme duration and students objectives.

Private days schools in Ireland have excellent reputation and are partly maintained by the Irish Government. Most of the schools are located in Dublin and some of the larger cities and towns around Ireland.  Most of them are single sex, coeducational, religious or non religious.

Private schools offer very good facilities, smaller class sizes and a wide variety of subjects and activities. There are some schools that offer IB programmes as well. Most schools offer a range of individual and team sports, either on campus or in the local community. They also offer a range of leisure and vocational activities outside the normal school day – photography, theatre, drama, orienteering, scouting, music, etc.

Standard non-classroom facilities are science laboratories, subject rooms, laboratories, computer rooms, etc.

Private schols also offer different services that include guidance counseling, school visits (or religious instruction.

International students live with local Irish host families during their stay and have the possibility to speak English and learn more about Irish culture.

The number of boarding schools in Ireland is very limited. They have an excellent reputation and the majority of graduated process to top level universities.

Boarding schools are located throughout the country. Students are not generally permitted to leave the school except on official school breaks. Boarding students do get the opportunity to see different locations and experience town or city life when they have free weekends, mid-term breaks and other school holidays as they are placed with host families.

Most of the schools are coeducational, religious or non religouos. The facilities are excellent, student/teacher ratio is very small and most of the boarding schools offer a wide range of academic subjects, sports and activities.

Student’s accommodation is based in the school’s facilities, normally in single or double rooms. Climbo provides host family accommodation during school holidays.

Why do we love Ireland? It is a perfect destination for those students who want to live the experience of spending a term or school year abroad. An overseas study programme for teenagers is about a lot more than the quality of the classroom. It is also about environment – cultural, social, personal, educational – and how this environment encourages students to study, to be happy, to make friends, to feel at home.

The U.S. education system is different compared to other countries. Although the federal government contributes almost 10% of the national education budget, education is responsibility of state and local governments. Each state has its own department of education and laws regulating finances, staff, student attendance and curriculum. States also determine the number of years of compulsory education.

In most states, education is compulsory from age 6 to 16. The US education system has three cycles in most of the states: primary, secondary and post-secondary or higher education.  Secondary education is divided into two stages middle school or junior high school and high school. U.S. education experts frequently use the term K-12 to refer to all stages of education, from kindergarten before the first year – grade 1 of education, through high school graduation grade 12.

In the United States there are three types of colleges or schools: public schools, independent day schools or independent boarding schools. The public schools receive government funding and the independent schools are funded by tuition fees or donations. There are also differences in the education project, mission and values of each school in the U.S. The most popular ones are the coed schools, which admit students from different genders. There are also religious schools or single gender schools.

Military schools are also popular in the U.S. They offer strict education, mostly for students who would like to have a career in a military afterwards or students who feel that type of education suits them most.

There are also schools specialized in visual arts and performing arts, where the academic curriculum focuses on developing different artistic skills.

Few schools also offer Post Graduate (PG) or grade 13 for students aged 18 – 19. This grade is not a requirement, but many students choose it to take college level courses or for those who need an additional year to play sports.

Many states and communities offer programs for children with special needs, such as emotional and behavioral problems, learning disabilities, communication problems or physical disabilities. There are also private schools with special curriculum for to gifted children.

Attending as an international student in a public or private school during the school year in the United States, gives you a chance to experience the U.S. culture and life in an American family.

International students can select the type of school, the area and the state they’d like to live. The choice of school will depend on the student’s profile, English language level and the academic records.

Both public and private schools have a lot to offer, excellent academic programs and a wide variety of sports and activities. The difference between the public and private schools is mainly in the location and the state, the facilities, the teacher-student ratio or the number of students per class.

International students live in host families who provide accommodation and food. American families always support international students and help them integrate in the American life and culture.

Host families come from all backgrounds, beliefs, and philosophies. Some represent a ” traditional ” family with young children who enjoy the experience of having an older brother or sister in the house. Some host families have older children who have become independent and don’t live with their parents. There are also host families with single person, host father or host mother.  Regardless of the circumstances that may arise, host families share a common trait, making a young person from another country feel at home.

Boarding schools in the U.S. offer a unique experience for international students. They have reputation for being highly academic and very competitive. Boarding schools are considered an excellent option for students wishing to study in an American university. The education is more challenging and personalized than public or private day schools.  Students live and study with peers from different cultural and educational backgrounds, which help them reach a state of maturity, responsibility and respect.

Boarding schools offer small classes where students have more opportunities to make stronger relationships with their teachers and classmates.

Most of the schools don’t have all the grades. Normally Junior boarding schools are for Grades 3 to 8, ages 8 to 14 and Senior boarding schools or High schools for students of grades 9 to12 , ages 15 to 18.

Apart from the regular American curriculum, there are another two most common curriculums in the US schools – IB programme (International Baccalaureate) or Advanced placement (AP). Some boarding schools in the US also offer academic support program and an English language support for international students.

IB programme is one of the most recognized enrichment programs in the world. Most students focus on IB Dilpoma programme, the last two years of the secondary school.

The IB curriculum consists in six subjects – English, second language, individuals and societies (history, economics, business and management), sciences (biology, chemistry, physics and environmental systems), mathematics and computer science and an elective of visual arts subjects or other one of their choice. Many world universities recognize IB courses as a first- year equivalents.

Advanced placement is the most popular program in North America. An AP course could consist in one year long course and may be followed by an exam. There are around 37 courses and 22 subjects’ area exams and it’s an opportunity for the students to focus on different areas that are at most interested in and where they excel the most. Those courses also may be more challenging.

The vast majority of boarding schools in the United States have specialized, vocational and sports programs, clubs and a great options for extracurricular activities – STEAM, visual and performing arts, design, photography and all type of excellent facilities for sports.

Many offer college preparatory classes, so most students who graduate from boarding schools continue their studies at highly ranked universities.

If you are considering a boarding school in the United States, we will be happy to guide you and select most suitable option according student’s profile and expectations.

Being an exchange students with J1 visa in the US, is probably one of the most popular and affordable programs for international participants. One of the advantages of this program is the cultural immersion in the American life and culture.

The program is designed for students between 15 and 18 years old with advanced English level, very good academic transcripts and a highest level of maturity.

This type of program does not allow free choice of destination, school or family. Students are placed in public schools across the country and the host families are volunteers, which mean that they do not receive any benefit or remuneration for hosting international students. American families choose the international students analyzing their motivation and profile. Once the host family chooses the student then the school and the area will be assigned.

All the host families are screened by local organizations. This includes reference checks, criminal background checks for all household members over the age of 18 and an interview. This process is determined by rigorous procedures and in full compliance with U.S. Department of State regulations.

School year programs in the United States offer international students the opportunity to learn about another culture, experience new traditions and make lifelong friendships. Definitely, this is an unforgettable high school experience.

Canada

  • Best quality of life and public education.
  • Program options in French or English.
  • One of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries.
  • 13-18 YO
  • School year and semester programs
  • Public and private schools
  • Family accommodation or boarding school
  • Starting at 20.000€ for a school year program

Canada is home to some of the best educational institutions in the world. Public education is strong and very well funded, much of it administered at the provincial level. As a result, some aspects of the education system may vary from province to province. However, since education is overseen by the federal government, the standard of public education remains high across the country. In Canada, apart from a public education system with a very good level, there are private schools, the so-called boarding schools, as in the United States. Generally, the education system is divided into three levels: ”Primary, Secondary and Post secondary”. Compulsory education in Canada begins at age 5, 6 or 7 depending on the school district.

Primary Education

Also known as elementary school, from Grade 1 (ages six to seven) through Grade 8 (ages 13 to 14). The school year normally runs from September to the following June.

Secondary Education

Also known as secondary school, this level goes from Grade 9 (14 to 15 years old) to Grade 12 (17 to 18 years old), also known as high school. Depending on the province, this may vary.

Undoubtedly, an excellent option for high school and one of the best opportunities to prepare for college. The quality of the education system in Canada is due in large part to the preparation of the teachers, who have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and one year of practical teacher training. Teachers are required to regularly improve their skills through continuing education and professional development. Public schools have a daytime schedule, classes are held Monday through Friday. International students have the opportunity to study a variety of subjects combined with many sports and activities. Accommodation during the stay is with a family, which resides in the school area. Living with a Canadian family is one of the best ways to learn English and experience the Canadian culture. Families that host international students must meet all requirements and high quality standards. All host families are residents of Canada, come from different cultural backgrounds and reflect the diversity of Canadian culture.

The boarding schools in Canada must teach the same curriculum as public schools in the province or territory. Class sizes in boarding schools tend to be smaller than in public schools, where students can also benefit from a more specialized academic curriculum. Some private schools are religious, coeducational or admit single-sex students. We collaborate with boarding schools that offer IB (International Baccalaureate) programs or sports and specialized programs in different subjects. In the private boarding school, international students are housed in the school’s residences. Rooms can be single or shared with other students.

Canada offers a public education system of the highest quality, if we add to that safety, amazing landscapes and an organization of 10, we have all the ingredients to guarantee an incredible experience.

French education has an excellent reputation and high standard.  It has always been described as traditional and very strict. All French students have access to a free public education. However, in France there are also international, private or religious schools.

The education system has three stages, as in most European countries: primary, secondary and higher education.

Schooling in France begins at 3 years of age and includes the stage of non-compulsory early childhood education. At the age of 6, all French children begin their compulsory primary education stage. This stage lasts up to 11 years.

After primary school, students begin secondary education which is divided into two stages. The first is the ‘’ College ’’ stage for students from 11 to 15 years old. This stage has 4 years of duration, each year is called with the following terms: Sixième, Cinquième, Quatrième and Troisième. The last year students have to take an exam to get the “Brevet des collèges” diploma.

The second stage of this cycle is the Lycée, for students aged 15 to 18. After finishing their studies, students take the “Bac” or Baccalauréat qualification.

Unique opportunities for international students to experience french culture and traditions. This program is available to international students from 11 to 18 years old.

The selection of the area and the type of school will depend on the student’s academic records and the level of French.

We work with public or private schools in different areas of the country.

The academic curriculum will depend on the age of the student, it may include different areas and subjects such as French, mathematics, history, geography, modern languages, science, chemistry, physics, arts or music.

During the school year program, students stay on a full board basis and can choose between two types of accommodation, depending on availability.

The first option is the French family accommodation where international students attend the local school. This experience provides an authentic cultural and linguistic immersion. The host family will help students to integrate into the French customs and way of life. The second option accommodation in a boarding school from Monday to Friday and in a host family during weekends.

There are many academic options in France in a boarding school. If French is the first language, students can enroll in a French education system. If French is the second or third language, there are several options in French boarding schools. International students can follow the international IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum to obtain the IB diploma, follow the French curriculum with academic support and extra French language classes. In addition, some boarding schools in France offer a bilingual system of English and French.

Boarding schools also offer a great variety of vocational and specialized programs. International students have the opportunity to enjoy excellent facilities, artistic, sports and recreational activities.

The accommodation takes place in the residences of the boarding school in a multicultural environment. School staff will provide psychological support through dialogue, humor and communication in French and English to guarantee the integrations of the students.

When we talk about France we think about its culture, language, gastronomy… Undoubtedly it is one of the most visited countries in the world. The educational system, highly valued and humanistic, makes France the ideal destination for those seeking a linguistic and cultural immersion. When considering a school year in France, it is essential to know how to choose the best program and the best experience. Several factors must be taken into account, such as the level of French and the student’s academic record.

In Germany, education is the responsibility of the federal states. Compulsory schooling lasts about 9 years. The vast majority of children attend public school, however there are a growing number of private schools in the country, some with international education systems. School starts at 6 years of age, when children begin the elementary school stage, which lasts 4 years. After this stage, secondary school begins: Hauptschule, Realschule, Gesamtschule, Gymnasium. The standards and the balance between practical and theoretical subjects vary between the different types of secondary schools, as does the number of school years. Gymnasium is the type of school chosen by the vast majority of international students. Students graduate from Gymnasium after 12th grade and receive a high school certificate, the Abitur, which is required for university study. Public school attendance in Germany takes place from Monday to Friday. There are two school semesters. The first semester starts in summer and ends in January, the second semester runs from January until June or July, sometimes in August, as each federal state has its own vacation periods.

This classic program is based on a school year or school term in a German public school almost anywhere in the country. The student cannot choose the destination, it will be assigned to him/her according to his/her level of German and academic records.

With the public school selected option the student has the freedom to select the city or location for the school year or semester in Germany. Staying with a host family is an authentic cultural experience. Each family is different, it can be a single-parent family, families with several children, families with no children, elderly couples, etc. Families live throughout the country, most of them in residential areas of large cities or in small towns.

Most of the private boarding schools are located around Berlin and Munich. The advantage of private schools is the small class size, which is mostly around 15-20 students (public schools tend to have up to 33 students), so the attention is more personalized. It is a good opportunity to live more independently and make many friends from all over the world. Foreign students are housed in the residence halls of the schools, usually in single or shared rooms.

Germany is a modern and cosmopolitan country. Its 82 million inhabitants make it the most populous country in the European Union. Germany has much to offer the international traveler – fine cuisine, sports, nature, festivals, cultural celebrations, resorts, inspiring architecture, art and many other leisure activities.
